Welcome to Class 202!
Dear Shoesmith Fifth Graders & Families,
My name is Mrs. Yassky and I am excited to begin my third year at Shoesmith as the fifth grade literacy teacher! The 2022-2023 school year will be my eleventh year teaching. I attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and earned my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and my master’s degree in Educational Administration. I taught kindergarten for two years in Evanston/Skokie District 65 and then relocated to New York City and taught fourth grade for five years for New York City Public Schools. While living in New York, I also taught an inquiry-based science enrichment program to fourth/fifth graders and earned more than 300+ hours of literacy professional development at Columbia University, Teachers College. In 2019, I moved back to Chicago and began teaching for Chicago Public Schools. I consider myself a lifelong learner and have a long-term goal of school leadership. Outside of my classroom responsibilities, I have directed and participated in a number of after-school teaching programs, coaching roles, non-profit organizations and summer programs. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, reading, exercising and spending time with family and friends. I have a passion for teaching literacy. For students in elementary school, literacy is a key to lifelong learning and opportunities for success. I believe effective literacy instruction develops students' linguistic and cognitive abilities through the explicit integration of reading, writing, speaking, and listening into instruction across all content areas. I have high expectations for myself as an educator and hold my students to high standards as well. It is important that we work as a team and communicate effectively through this new school year. Your child will have homework over the summer. Below you will find links to the summer assignments, supply list and other important documents. We are in this together and I look forward to beginning this new partnership with students and families during the 22-23 school year! Respectfully, Nicole Yassky [email protected] |
